1884 50C AU Details (Graffiti) (NGC)While we typically don't list coins with problems on our website, this one is deserving of a second look. It is a tricky date to find in business strike format (usually encountered in Proof) and the graffiti - scratches almost resembling the letter "X" carved into the right obverse field) - is somewhat typical of coins of the period. Perhaps coins were marked in case they were lost and needed to be identified, or possibly scratched to check the underlying metal for silver composition throughout. The color on this coin hides the graffiti well, and it is a dififcult enough coin that we have elected to offer it to our quality-minded clientele despite the unfortunate scratches left by the coin's history.
